22 December 2009

Bah. Humbug.

Okay, so, it's almost Christmas.  And, I mean, I love Christmas, but my taste in Christmas music hasn't evolved with my taste in other music, because, to my knowledge, The Super Friendz and/or Elvis Costello have not released holiday albums.  Therefore, I listen to a lot of the same festive tunes that I liked when I was 13.  I'm not going to lie to you, folks, 13-year-old me listened to some terrible, terrible music*, so the Christmas selections are sparse on this edition of Thrice Removed.

Well, that, and I played 'Fairytale of New York' last week.

Anyway, here is what you've all been waiting for:

But before that!  Thanks again, Dana, for cohosting while Evan was... otherwise engaged.

Elvis Costello & the Attractions - I Hope You're Happy Now (Blood & Chocolate, 1986)
Maybe Smith - A Walrus with a Gunswordaxe (Another Murder in the Morning, 2009)
A.C. Newman - All of My Days and All of My Days Off (Get Guilty, 2009)

Dumb Angel - Harvest of Bread (I Woke Up This Morning, 2008)
Dan Mangan - Basket (Nice, Nice, Very Nice, 2009)
Pearson - This is Not a Letter, Nor Is It a Postcard (Clear Thinking on Mixed Feelings, 2009)

Set for Dylan & the BC crew, because I'm bad at finding Ween songs:
Thrush Hermit - Glum Boy (French Inhale 7" single, 1995)
The Human Soundtrack - All Those Staring People (Organs for Sale, 2008)
Mardeen - Ice Truck Killer (ep, 2009)
Said the Whale - My Government Heart (Howe Sounds/Taking Alabonia, 2008, for Evan)

Woodhands - CP24 (Remorsecapade, 2010)
Discovery - It's Not My Fault (It's My Fault) (LP, 2009)

Ben Folds - Bizarre Christmas Incident (Maybe This Christmas, 2002)

Merry Christmas, folks.  Have a great holiday.

*Like this! Which I actually still secretly love.

14 December 2009

Murderecords Tribute

Way back in 1992, Sloan started up a record label called Murderecords that would release their music as well as the music of their friends in and around Halifax.  If you think that this would make a better name for a rap label, you are not alone, but the logo is a group of crows, which is called a murder, and it all makes sense.

That was a lot of ill-placed commas.

Anyway, in honour of Sloan's visit to Saskatoon, here is the playlist for December 6th's all Murderecords show.  Enjoy.

Sloan - Pretty Voice (Peppermint EP, 1992)
The Hardship Post - My Only Aim (Hack EP, 1993)

11 December 2009

Oh My Soul

I know I haven't posted the Murderecords playlist yet, and I'm going to get to that, but hold onto your hats, folks, because Thrush Hermit is reunion-touring.  Is this the best day of my life?

Oh, probably.

02 December 2009

Oh, by the way...

It has taken me too long to post this.

Yeah, Sloan's got a new digital EP.  They're playing at Louis' on December 10.  Hopefully I will see you there.

When Insects Rule the World: The Playlist

Dana's theme for this edition of When Insects Rule the World was "Funeral Songs", where we (mostly Dana) posed the question: If you died right now, what song would you want played at your funeral?

Here's the playlist we (mostly Dana) came up with:

Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine (The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, 2009)

Dana's - Frightened Rabbit - Head Rolls Off (The Midnight Organ Fight, 2008)

Doug Hoyer's - The Burning Hell - Last Will and Testament (Tick Tock, 2008)

Woodpigeon - I Live a Lot of Places (Treasury Library Canada, 2008)

The Kinks - Strangers (Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, 1970)

Shotgun Jimmie - Bedhead (The Onlys, 2007)

Monolithic Cloud Parade - Do Ghosts Dream of Death? (Children with Wolf Heads, 200...9?)

Mine - Joel Plaskett - Natural Disaster (La De Da, 2005)

Dan Mangan's - Radiohead - Street Spirit (The Bends, 1995)

Wintersleep - Home (Wintersleep, 2003)

I'm sure Dana's going to post a more complete list up at his blog and include who each song was dedicated to. I'm sure of it.

05 November 2009

I'll be co-hosting Dana's show Thursday at 9. Tonight at 9, if you want to get technical.

Hot Damn

Listen to this:

Them Crooked Vultures is a band made up of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and John Paul Jones (I can't remember what band he's from). I know, right? My head nearly exploded, too.

Anyway, this is probably being played to death on The Rock Station (or if it isn't yet, it will be in a month or so when they finally find out about it) but I love rock and roll and I don't care what you think!*

*I care a little bit.

Halifax Pop Explosion Special

12 October 2009

So It Goes

Tonight Evan was off on a top-secret undercover mission (oops, I've said too much) so I did Thrice Removed by myself for the first time since May. It was... pretty good.

Tom Fun Orchestra - Last of the Curious Thieves (You Will Land with a Thud, 2007)
The Wooden Sky - When We Were Young (If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone, 2009)
The Traveling Wilburys - Runaway (Vol. 3, 1990)

Rubyfish - Mr. Sun (single, 1994, Random 45!)

Tegan & Sara - Hell (Sainthood, 2009)
Sloan - Take It Upon Yourself (Digital EP, soon to be released)

Super Mystery Tribond Set*
Dan Mangan - Et Les Mots Croises (Nice, Nice, Very Nice, 2009)
The Telepathic Butterflies - She Looks Good (Breakfast in Suburbia, 2008)
Library Voices - Things We Stole From Vonnegut's Grave (Hunting Ghosts [& Other Collected Shorts], 2008)

Rare Earth - I Just Want to Celebrate (One World, 1971, for Roxana)
The Rolling Stones - She's So Cold (Emotional Rescue, 1980)
The Beatles - I've Just Seen a Face (Help!, 1965)

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band (The Ruminant Band, 2009)
The Dodos - Red & Purple (Visiter, 2008)

*The thread that ties these songs together is Kurt Vonnegut. Nice, Nice, Very Nice is a reference to his poem, The Fifty-third Calypso, The Telepathic Butterflies' name is inspired from a passage in the novel Breakfast of Champions, and the last one is pretty obvious.

New Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend's new song, 'Horchata' is available for download at their website. It's no 'Ottoman', but it's all right.* Check it out.

The new album, Contra, will be released on January 12.

*My hopes might be a little too high for Vampire Weekend since I firmly believe 'Ottoman' is one of the top three songs ever of all time.

FM-Phasis 2009: Last Day

As you've no doubt surmised from the title of this here post, FM-Phasis 2009 is drawing very quickly to a close.

And I've only given away one homemade toque.

Call in your pledges to Thrice Removed on CFCR 90.5 FM at 664-6678 or 242-5002 and remember that there's still an afghan up for grabs.

Thanks to all who have donated so far! I'll see you at Elliott Brood.

28 September 2009

Exciting Happenings

First, the folks over at Gooseberry Records are putting together a Local Rabbits tribute, and are looking for contributors. If you are in a band, would like to submit a Local Rabbits cover, and can hit the January 31, 2010 deadline, send an e-mail to gooseberryrecords at hotmail dot com to get in contact. It'll be an early spring release.

If that's not enough for you, Gooseberry is also putting out a Plumtree tribute in the summer, which probably* has somethin' to do with that Scott Pilgrim vs The World movie that's coming out around that time. Same bat time, same bat e-mail address.

Secondly, Sloan has unleashed a new song

and it is good.

*Note: Probably = Definitely

SOCAN Survey Sunday

SOCAN is handing out "cash money dollars" to the Canadian artists played from September 27-29, so we chose really short songs from all of the Canucks in the list in order to milk as much dough as possible.

Also, FM-Phasis is on until October 2, so open your hearts and your wallets to Saskatoon's best radio station. Make a pledge to Thrice Removed (or any old show on CFCR) and experience the rush of extreme happiness and well-being that can only be achieved by donating to community radio.

The rest of us will have to make do with the new tunes up on their MySpace page.

**ALSO, Slow Down, Molasses have been picked to play at the Halifax Pop Explosion this year, help from October 20-24. In Halifax. Congratulations! Check them out before they leave town on October 8th at Amigos.

FM-Phasis Week 2: Steppin' It Up

Alrighty, folks. In addition to the warm & fuzzy feeling you get from contributing to a worthy cause, you can get something fuzzy that'll keep you warm:

The first 3 people to donate $75 or more to Thrice Removed are going to get a hand-crocheted scarf or toque in the colour of your choice made by yours truly.

Also, I'm going to crochet an afghan for the first person who is not my co-host to donate $125 to Thrice Removed. You get to pick the colours.

Plus, you still get to pick CDs and prizes for donating to CFCR. It's true!

Let's do this. Call 664-6678 to get the fine folks at the station (and be sure to mention Thrice Removed) or 242-5002 from 11pm-midnight this Sunday, September 27.

Congratulations, fellows.
